Madius: Ensure governance ecosystem in place when SESB returned to Sabah
“Maybe there will be a new ministry, but I suggest to the Federal Government that this matter be discussed carefully so that when the governance of electricity supply is handed over to Sabah next year, then the governance ecosystem is in place,” said Madius.
Kuala Lumpur: Tuaran Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau said the Government should hold discussions and conduct research to ensure the mechanism for governing the supply of energy is in the best possible shape when the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) is handed over to the State Government next year.

“This is to ensure that the administration of the supply can be implemented properly in terms of generation, transmission and distribution,” he said at the Dewan Rakyat, here, Wednesday.

“In Sarawak, the governance ecosystem is well established. There is a utility company which is Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), then the implementing regulator which is the Sarawak Ministry of Utilities and Telecommunications, as well as the policy maker which is the Sarawak Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability.

“In Sabah, the utility company is SESB and the regulator is the Sabah Energy Commission (EcoS). But from the maker’s point of view, the principle is still unclear.

“Maybe there will be a new ministry, but I suggest to the Federal Government that this matter be discussed carefully so that when the governance of electricity supply is handed over to Sabah next year, then the governance ecosystem is in place,” said Madius, who is also SESB Chairman.

He said, electricity supply governance issues need to be emphasised to avoid any governance mismanagement in line with the emphasis contained in 12th Malaysia Plan.

“That’s why we in Sabah don’t have much time. We don’t have the luxury of time. In relation to that, we need to manage this electricity supply well in terms of generation, transmission and distribution, and at the same time take into account sustainability matters which is to meet the requirements of the government policy that has been launched at the federal level which is to achieve ‘Net-zero Emissions’ by year 2050,” he said.
