Kota Kinabalu: Sirim QAS International has been officially appointed by the Energy Commission of Sabah (ECoS) as its authorised testing partner for all gas-related equipment produced, installed and sold in Sabah for the next five years.
“With the aim to contribute to the growth and expansion of Sabah’s natural gas industry, Sirim is committed to supporting this development that is aligned with its vision to achieve sustainability via an effective and all-inclusive energy policy and masterplan to stimulate the economic growth and competitive markets in Sabah,” assured Sirim Berhad Chairman, Datuk Ir. (Dr) Khairol Anuar Mohamad Tawi.
“We, at Sirim QAS International, are honoured by this appointment as ECoS acknowledges our credibility as Malaysia’s premier certification body, and Sirim QAS is enthusiastic to play a major role in ensuring the safety of the consumers related to the gas domestic equipment,” said Nur Fadhilah Muhammad, Chief Executive Officer of Sirim QAS International.
She added that defective or improper gas appliances can cause fire, gas leaks, and even explosions, which is why it is important for gas appliances marketed in the country to undergo tests to ensure safety.
Sirim QAS International will also collaborate closely with ECoS to introduce a unique certification label for the state, known as the Sirim - ECoS label.
This label will incorporate all the security and authenticity features currently associated with other products and services that have undergone its rigorous testing process.
“ECoS is confident of Sirim’s capability, expertise, and experience in certifying consumer-based products and services for the last 40 years. This collaboration is an assurance that we are serious about developing a more sustainable ecosystem for our natural gas industry,” added Datuk Ir. Abdul Nasser Abdul Wahid, Chief Executive Officer of ECoS.
He reiterated the importance of having all gas-related equipment to be tested, certified and approved by an ECoS authorised testing partner in compliance with Subregulation 115 (1) Gas Supply Regulations 2023, failing which such non-compliance, on conviction, will result in a fine not exceeding five hundred thousand ringgit, and in the case of a continuing offence, to a further fine not exceeding ten thousand ringgit for every day or part of a day during which the offence continues after conviction.
Additionally, he added, individuals or companies wishing to seek clarification on this matter can send emails to careline@ecos.gov.my or call 088-205574 to set up an appointment with the relevant ECoS officials.
