Child abuse cases: Sabah among the top three states
The child protection advocacy programme is a platform for the local community, especially teachers, and the Parents and Teachers’ Association (PTA) to act as eyes and ears to the Ministry in helping to prevent the increase in cases of child abuse and neglect. -
Kota Kinabalu: Sabah was among the top three states in the country that recorded the highest number of children who needed protection last year.

Based on the statistics by the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM), in 2022, Sabah recorded 705 children – 152 boys and 553 girls - who sought protection.

The highest number was recorded in Selangor, with 1,691, followed by Kuala Lumpur (961). The total number of abused or neglected children in the country stood at 6,770 last year.

In the first five months of this year, 333 cases involving physical, sexual and emotional abuse and child negligence have been reported and handled by the Community Welfare Department (JKM) in Sabah.
