Kota Kinabalu: Six people were penalised by the Magistrate’s Court here Monday for committing drug-related offences.
Four of them Basil Maliki, Dealvian Dego, Royston Johny and Md Raziman Majid pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to taking syabu.
They had committed the offence at separate locations here and Penampang in March.
Basil was sentenced to eight months jail, Dealvian and Royston were handed seven months jail while Raziman was fined RM2,300 or six months jail.
Taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years jail, on conviction.
Meanwhile, Sharul Faizan was jailed 10 months for having syabu as framed under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
The charge provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years jail or both, on conviction.
In another case, an unemployed Indonesian man was sentenced to four months jail for theft.
Saiful Bahari Sarni, 27, admitted to stealing a handphone belonging to Hasniati Dire at 7pm on Aug 8 at Putatan.
He was charged under Section 379 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine, on conviction.
The prosecution informed the court that Saiful stole the gadget placed in a stall behind the Golden Centre Building in Putatan.
Police arrested him on the same day at 9.30pm and the stolen handphone was recovered from him, said the prosecution.
The court ordered Saiful to serve the sentence consecutively with his present jail sentence and to be referred to the Immigration Department thereafter.
In another development, a woman was fined RM1,500 or one jail for engaging in gambling activity
Fielicia Jalani, 24, admitted to purchasing two illegal lottery tickets at 6.45pm on July 25, in front of a premises at Lorong Bunga Tanjung 2, Kepayan.
She had committed an offence under Section 9(1) of the Common Gaming House Act provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months jail or both, on conviction.
