Kota Kinabalu: A 25-year-old man was on Monday sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered given 12 lashes of the cane by the High Court for trafficking 3,448.1gm of syabu four years ago.
Judicial Commissioner Amelati Parnell in delivering her ruling, Monday, found Calvin Low Chan Hoe guilty of committing the offence at 12.05pm on Oct 23, 2019 near Nationwide Express, HS Commercial Centre, Penampang.
Amelati ordered Low to serve the sentence from the date of his arrest on Oct 23, 2019.
Low, a customer service representative, had on April 28, 2021 claimed trial to the charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952.
The charge is punishable under Section 39B (2) of the same Act which carries the death sentence or imprisonment for life and whipping not less than 15 strokes if not sentenced to death, on conviction.
Low was ordered to enter his defence on May 27, this year.
One defence witness and six prosecution witnesses testified throughout the trial. Deputy Public Prosecutor Rustam Sanip appeared for the prosecution while Low was represented by counsel Goldam Hamid.
