Kota Kinabalu: Two men were jailed by the Magistrate’s Court, Thursday, for having drugs.
Shahrizul Yakub, 38, and Federic Elmo Jelin, 27, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to having syabu.
Syahrizul was jailed for 13 months from date of arrest on July 18 for having 1.19gm of syabu at Kampung Rampayan Ulu, Manggatal.
Federic was fined RM2,700 or 11 months in jail for having 0.09gm of syabu at 1.20am on Feb 28 by the roadside of Jalan Nosoob, Penampang.
Prosecuting officer, Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, told the court that police seized a packet containing drug substance from Shahrizul at 12.40pm.
The packet was sent to the Chemistry Department which confirmed it to be syabu and led to Sharizul’s arrest.
Kelvan informed the court that Federic was arrested after he handed a plastic bag containing syabu to police.
Counsel Carmen Khoo requested a lenient sentence for Shahrizul as he is unemployed.
She also requested leniency for Feeric as he is City Hall worker earning RM60 daily and is a first-time offender.
Meanwhile, Kelvan applied for a deterrent sentence for Shahrizul and Federic.
In the same court, a 20 year-old woman was fined RM1,800 or five months in jail for syabu.
Sitti Nurhashima Sari Mohammad Hashim pleaded guilty under Section 15 (1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years’ jail, on conviction.
The court also ordered Sitti to undergo police supervision for two years at nearest police station upon release from prison.
Counsel Lim Ming Zoong @ Lawrence requested leniency for Sitti as she is a young and a part-time worker.
However, Kelvan applied for a deterrent sentence and police supervision for two years.
