PETALING JAYA: The road transport department (JPJ) has warned drivers of private vehicles against violating regulations on tinting their windows, saying that they may face a fine or jail time.

JPJ said that the new set of regulations, gazetted under the Motor Vehicles Rules 1991 in 2019, stipulate that the visible light transmittance for a vehicle’s front windscreen should be at least 70% and at least 50% for the front side windows. However, it said the rear side windows and rear windscreen may allow for 0% visible light transmittance.

“Drivers who violate these regulations may be fined up to RM2,000 upon conviction or imprisoned for a period of time not exceeding six months for a first offence,” it said in a statement.

For subsequent convictions, drivers can be either fined up to RM4,000 or jailed for up to 12 months.

JPJ has issued a total of 108,428 traffic violation notices related to tinted windows since 2019.

According to JPJ, individuals who require tinted windows for safety or health reasons can apply for approval via the JPJ portal.
