TAWAU: An Indonesian couple were charged at the Magistrate’s Court, here, Thursday, for possessing 4091.88gm of syabu hidden in a blue plastic barrel earlier this month.
No plea was recorded from the accused, Arman Amirul, 22, and his wife, Nuhasna Supriadi, 21, after the charge was read before Magistrate Don Stiwin Malanjum.
According to the charges, the two accused were jointly found to be in possession of the drugs at the old Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Jetty at about 8.50am on October 4.
They were charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping, if convicted.
The court set November 16 for remention, pending the results of the chemist’s report before the case is transferred to the High Court.
The couple were arrested by police while attempting to smuggle out the drugs back to their hometown using an illegal route.
The two accused, who work in the plantation sector in Lahad Datu, were also found not to have any valid identification documents.
They were not represented by a lawyer. Prosecuting Officer of the Narcotics Crime Investigation Division of the Tawau District Police Headquarters (IPD), ASP Jeffrey Kadisun prosecuted.
