Kota Kinabalu: Sabah’s up and coming weightlifter Faith Wong will be representing the country at the EGAT King’s Cup International Weightlifting (Junior) Championship in Surin, Thailand starting tomorrow (Sunday).
The 16-year-old Kota Kinabalu High School student and daughter of State coach Nicholas Wong is the only Sabahan in the eight-member team.
She only started her training in April last year under the Sabah Sports Council (MSN) programme led by Nicholas and assisted by Nik Mohd Faiz Nik Ariff and Mohad Fadhli Mohd Yusop.
She won a gold medal in the 59kg category at the Bukit Jalil National Weightlifting Talents Carnival held in July this year.
It was a much improved performance than her debut appearance on the national scene in August last year where she won bronze in the youth 59 kg category at the National Weightlifting Carnival in Johor.
Meanwhile, Sabah Weightlifting Association president Philip Gissan congratulated Faith for the breakthrough in making the national junior team.
He said the competition will prepare her well for the Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak next year, and hopes she will give her best and have a successful outing.
