Govt to evacuate family members of embassy staff in Beirut

PUTRAJAYA: The government has decided that family members of its embassy staff in Beirut, Lebanon, should return to Malaysia until the situation improves, following the Israeli attack in southern Lebanon.

The foreign affairs ministry said the decision was to ensure the safety of all Malaysians there.

“However, the embassy will continue to operate as usual,” it said in a statement today.

Wisma Putra also urged Malaysians to postpone non-essential travel to Lebanon.

It said the government had instructed the embassy to take precautionary measures and monitor the situation of Malaysians in the country, including members of the Malaysian Armed Forces taking part in the United Nations peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

It also said the embassy had been in close contact with 12 Malaysians and their families residing in Lebanon.

According to media reports, southern Lebanon has also been targeted by Israeli rocket fire following the conflict with Palestine since Oct 7.
