Kota Kinabalu: A 41-year-old man was fined RM5,000 or six months jail by the Magistrate’s Court, here, Monday, for committing an offence under the Electricity Supply Act 1990.
Fitness instructor Chong Shau Leong pleaded guilty before Magistrate Wan Farrah Farriza Wan Ghazali to the charge which stated that, as a domestic consumer, had dishonestly used electricity at a house in Taman Friendly, Jalan Kolam, Luyang at noon on Aug 10, this year.
Chong had committed an offence under Section 37(3)(c) of the Electricity Supply Act 1990 and punishable under Section 37(3)(A)(i) of the same Act which provides for a fine of between RM1,000 and RM50,000 or jail term of up to a year or both, on conviction.
The court was informed by the prosecution that a police team together with the SESB Strike Force conducted ‘Op Api SESB’ on the said house and found that a wire installed into the store did not go through the SESB meter.
SESB’s investigations confirmed that the illegal connection had resulted in the theft of electricity, said the prosecution.
Counsel Luke Ressa Balang, representing Chong, requested a lenient sentence as he was remorseful and it was his first offence.
In another case, a salesman was charged with disposing of a stolen luxury watch.
Mohd Safwan Jangun pleaded not guilty to disposing the stolen Rolex watch belonging to Lim Eng Koi at 4pm on May 9, this year at Jalan Lintas, Kolombong.
The charge was framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code.
Inspector Albert Basiri in applying for a pre-trial case management proposed bail at RM5,000 in two sureties.
Safwan, who was not represented, requested a lower fine as he has two children and his wife is pregnant.
The court set Nov 20 for case management and released the accused on a bail of RM3,000 in two sureties.
