Police recovering 1MDB assets worth millions after ex-banker probe

Kuala Lumpur: Bukit Aman’s commercial crime investigation department (CCID) is recovering 1MDB-linked assets worth millions of ringgit from an individual.

CCID director Ramli Yoosuf said they identified the individual following their investigation into former Goldman Sachs banker Roger Ng.

“This is what we are actively pursuing. We are positive about recovering assets worth millions of ringgit,” he said at a press conference here today.

However, he did not reveal the individual’s identity as it could jeopardise their investigations, but the person is believed to be abroad.

Ng was repatriated to assist authorities in the ongoing 1MDB investigation earlier this month.

In March, Ng was sentenced to 10 years in prison in New York for his involvement in embezzling billions of dollars from 1MDB.

The New York district court found Goldman’s former head of investment banking in Malaysia guilty of helping his former boss, Tim Leissner, embezzle money from the fund, launder the proceeds and bribe government officials to win business.

The police have also investigated former 1MDB lawyer Jasmine Loo and seized assets totalling almost RM93.2 million acquired under her name.

In May, another person involved in the 1MDB and SRC International investigations, Kee Kok Thiam, returned to Malaysia and gave his cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

However, he died following a stroke in the same month.
