Anwar threatens action against those associating him with Israel
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says PAS MP Ahmad Yahaya’s attempts to link him to Israel were disgraceful.
Kuala Lumpur: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has threatened to take action against those who associate him with Israel, referring to a statement made by Ahmad Yahaya (PN-Pokok Sena).

“Don’t let the PAS ulama council chief use the Harakah newspaper to link me with Israel. It is a disgraceful statement that violates ethical standards,” Anwar said in the Dewan Rakyat today, following a Harakah report “Is Malaysia under Anwar hesitant to support Palestine?” which quoted Ahmad.

“This is slander made by someone wearing a serban. I strongly deny such claims and if they are repeated, I will take stern action.

“I must emphasise that such a statement is like building a palace on the graves of the dead.”

In the report, Ahmad, the PAS ulama council chief, expressed concerns that the Anwar-led government is now seen as being apologetic to the Palestinian struggle only after claiming to be threatened by certain parties and pressured by coalition party allies.

He also claimed that the government is bending the Palestinians’ main narrative of the struggle for liberation, to the point of being trapped in following the narrative of Israel and the West.

Meanwhile, Anwar expressed his commitment to helping Palestine through negotiations and sending humanitarian aid.

“(The government) works every day on this issue, from requesting the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation to hold a meeting with China, Russia, Brazil, Iceland and Bolivia, to discussions with Japanese prime minister Fumio Kishida, the Dutch ambassador, and this week, with the vice-president of China,” he said.

Anwar also said PKR has never been a member of Liberal International (LI), only an associate member at the initial stage.

“However, we did not participate in some of its decisions, including the recognition of LGBT and its stance on Israel. I hope this is not politicised,” he said.

He said he once attended the LI convention in Cairo, Egypt, and expressed a strong stance against injustice and raised issues related to Palestine, which was positively received by world Muslim leaders.
