864kg of frozen meat seized in Sandakan halal op

SANDAKAN: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN) Sandakan branch seized 864kg of frozen products worth RM17,302 from a premises during an integrated halal operation, here, Wednesday. 

The operation, involving 11 personnel from KPDN Sandakan, Sabah Veterinary Services Department and the Sandakan Health Office, was carried out at importer and wholesaler’s premises.

The seizure was made after the premises was found storing halal products together with non-halal products, comprising three types of animal meat, in a frozen storage room.

KPDN Sandakan Chief District Enforcement Officer Azdy Zukkry John said the case would be further investigated under Article 3 of the Trade Descriptions (Definition of Halal) Order 2011.

If convicted under Order 5 of the Trade Description (Definition of Halal) Order 2011, a company can be fined not more than RM5 million and for a second or subsequent offence, a fine not more than RM10 million.

Individuals can face a fine not exceeding RM1 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding three years, or both, and for a second or subsequent offence, a fine not exceeding RM5 million or imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years, or both.

Azdy after this leading the operation together with Sandakan Environmental Health Officer Sundusin Nganro and Sandakan Veterinary Services Department Veterinary Assistant Ridowah B Kahar.

He said the KPDN Sandakan branch would continue to conduct the operation to ensure compliance under the Trade Description (Definition of Halal) Order 2011.

He said an investigation would also be carried out to determine whether the product was marketed, including restaurants, in this area.

On chicken prices, he said Sandakan KPDN alongside relevant agencies would inspect importers of frozen, frozen goods or products from abroad.

On the Rahmah Sales programme, he said more than 80 have been conducted in urban areas and 72 for rural areas on both stationary and mobile premises, adding that it is conducted according to a set schedule.

He said the KPDN will consider going to more places to cater to requests from Village Security and Development Committees (JKKKs) for the Rahmah Sales programme to move to their area.
