Kota Kinabalu: Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) confirmed that a water tank in one of its on-campus student residential colleges has been polluted.
On Friday, a video clip of a water tank infested with maggots went viral with some student residents lamenting that the water they used smelled foul in the last several days.
“The university is aware of the video clip.
Following this, the UMS management through the Development and Maintenance Department (JPP) conducted an investigation into the validity of the allegations as stated in the video.
“JPP confirmed that the incident occurred at one of the water tanks at Tun Pengiran Ahmad Raffae Residential College (KKTPAR),” the university’s Corporate Communications Centre said in a statement, Friday.
However, the university explained that the affected tank sources water through a tube well system and it does not affect the main water source channelled from the State Water Department which students use daily.
“Following the incident, JPP has ordered the maintenance contractor to empty the tank involved.
“The JPP has also instructed the maintenance contractor to constantly monitor every building facility at UMS to avoid any safety and health risks, especially to UMS students,” it said.
The university said its management will continue to monitor the development of students at KKTPAR to ensure their health is unaffected and their learning and daily lives are not interfered.
