Kota Kinabalu: Sabah can expect a major tourism boost once the National Geoparks Development Plan 2021-2023, which aims to spur socio-economic growth of local communities, is fully implemented.

Additionally, plans are underway to connect Sabah – the holder of the prestigious Unesco Triple Crown status – with Jeju Island in South Korea and Shennongjia in China, the only three locations in the world with triple crown recognition.

Sabah has three Unesco Geoparks which includes Kinabalu National Geoparks (declared May 2023), World Heritage Site (Dec 2, 2000) and Unesco Crocker Range Biosphere Reserve (June, 2014).

“This comprehensive roadmap is a long-term vision which provides much focus on creating sustainable tourism destinations that showcase Sabah’s world-class natural wonders, biodiversity conservation and unique cultural heritage,” said Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Tourism (Kepkas), Culture and Environment, Datuk Yusrie Abdullah.
