SANDAKAN: Karamunting Assemblyman Datuk George Hiew Vun Zin called on water village residents in Karamunting to take precaution in view of the high tide phenomenon expected to occur at the end of the month.

He said even though the tide situation this time is not as serious as last year, villagers should not be complacent.

“Always keep documents and valuables and be ready to move to a safer area or to a gathering location designated by the authorities in each village if the tide is higher,” he said in a statement.

He instructed task force to participate in a nightly patrol around the water villages alongside agencies on duty.

The agencies include the Royal Malaysian Police, the Royal Malaysian Navy, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) and the Civil Defence Force as well as Batu Sapi Parliamentary Service Centre representative.

The Karamunting Assemblyman’s task force also distributed drinking water, flashlights and other necessary tools to the team on duty in each village to make it easier for them to patrol at night.

“I’m grateful because these few nights, the waves are not as big and the water level started to drop earlier than expected,” said George, adding that the residents are safe.

George said the Karamunting area comprises six water villages.

“I hope all the villagers will take precautions. In the event of an emergency, prioritise to save children, women and the elderly first as well as those who need immediate assistance,” he said.
