Senior man killed, wife injured in LD jumbo attack

LAHAD DATU: A senior citizen was killed while his wife was injured in an elephant attack at a tapioca garden in Kampung Perpaduan, Skim Begahak, here, on Saturday night.

It was learnt that the 90-year-old man and his wife, 61, were inside a hut to watch their crops when a group of 12 elephants entered their garden looking for food in the 10pm incident.

The couple attempted to flee their hut, however, one of the elephants attacked them.

It was learnt that the jumbo had kicked and stepped on the couple. The impact of the attack was such that the man succumbed to injuries on his chest, eyes and hands.

The victim's wife suffered a broken waist and injuries on her thigh. She also suffered bruises on both hands. She was taken to Lahad Datu Hospital for treatment.

The body of the senior citizen was taken to Lahad Datu Hospital for further action.

District Police Chief, ACP Rohan Shah Ahmad, when contacted on Sunday, confirmed the incident.

Meanwhile, the Lahad Datu Wildlife Officer, Silvester Saimin, when contacted, said a team from the department had been sent to the scene for an inspection.

They later found the elephants' footprints, broken tapioca trees as well as traces of the victim's hut. They also found footprints near a small ditch where the couple was kicked and trampled on by the elephant.
