PENAMPANG: A retired army man was killed on New Year’s Day when he lost control of his Toyota Avanza and crashed into a road shoulder near a petrol station in Putatan, here, on Monday.
The 56-year-old was heading towards the city centre in the 7.53pm incident.
Penampang District Police Chief Supt Sammy Newton said the victim was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers from the Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
He said a front seat passenger escaped injuries, adding the victim’s body had been sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Forensic Department for a post-mortem.
The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
Sammy urged witnesses to come forward and assist in the police investigation, and the public not to spread photos of the incident.
