Legal Year gets off the block with procession by legal fraternity
Officers from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, lawyers from the Malaysian Bar and superior court judges in their full regalia marched into the Putrajaya International Convention Centre.
PUTRAJAYA: The 14th edition of the Legal Year opening got off to a rousing start with a short procession by the legal fraternity, a ceremony that has its roots in the United Kingdom.

Officers from the Attorney-General’s Chambers, lawyers from the Malaysian Bar and superior court judges in their full regalia marched into the Putrajaya International Convention Centre this morning.

Also present were the chief justice of Singapore Sundaresh Menon and foreign dignitaries.

Bar president Karen Cheah, who is also representing the Sabah Law Society and the Advocates Association of Sarawak, will be the first to deliver a speech on the occasion.

As equal partners in the administration of justice, the trio will use today’s occasion to reflect on significant events about the rule of law that have taken place over the preceding year and speak about their visions and aspirations for the new legal year.

The tradition here was started by then chief justice Zaki Azmi in 2010 and the event has been an annual affair since then except in 2021 due to restrictions imposed by the movement control order (MCO) to stem the spread of Covid-19.
