Death due to potholes: Order to concessionaire

Kota Kinabalu: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been instructed to ensure the concessionaire concerned repairs the road at Kg Jaya Baru in Kinabatangan which claimed the life of a District Council staff recently.

Deputy Chief Minister III cum Works Minister Datuk Ir Shahelmey Yahya was commenting the incident where a Kinabatangan District Council rubbish truck driver died while attempting to avoid potholes.

Izuan Mambasang was found trapped in the driver’s seat. A passenger was injured while another escaped unscathed.

Kinabatangan police chief Dzulbaharin Ismail said Izuan tried to avoid several potholes when he lost control of the vehicle before it toppled over.

He said reports of requirements should always be updated and the need for additional allocations if it becomes a constraint to the work requirements.

“The Kg Jaya Baru road is included in the Pan Borneo Highway project for upgrading expected to start this year.

“The structure of this road is indeed decrepit and can only be restored by carrying out major upgrading work (through implementing the Pan Borneo Highway project). 

“Wet weather conditions due to the rainy season with high traffic volumes continue to pressure road structures that have long exceeded their design period limits (weakness).

“Nevertheless, while waiting for the start of the Pan Borneo Highway package, the PWD through the appointed concessionaire has been instructed to carry out related maintenance and repair work,” he said.
