Kota Kinabalu: An undocumented man was fined RM2,000 by the Magistrate Court, Thursday, for intentionally displaying the symbol, emblem and badge of “Kappa Rho Kappa (KRK)” which was declared illegal by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
Ali Kiram, 28, pleaded guilty before High Deputy Registrar Syarifuddin Abdul Rasa who sat as Magistrate, to committing the offence at 6.40pm on Nov 7, 2023 at Taman Indah Permai, Sepanggar.
The charge under Section 50(1) of the Societies Act 1966 carries a jail term of up to three months or a fine of up to RM3,000, on conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Ling Ghuong Zin told the court that police arrested a man who was wearing a white shirt with the KRK symbol which was an organisation banned by the Home Ministry.
Ali confessed that he bought the shirt online and purposely displayed it. Unrepresented, Ali requested for a lenient fine.
DPP Ling applied for an adequate sentence and inform the court that he is undocumented.
The court ordered Ali also to be referred to the Immigration Department.
In another case, a former flight attendant was charged with assaulting another person with a helmet.
Awang Hashim Mohd Zaid, 58, pleaded not guilty to voluntarily causing hurt to the alleged victim with a helmet at 4pm on Dec 1, 2023 at the Tanjung Aru police station.
The offence under Section 324 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to 10 years or fine or with whipping or any two of such punishments, on conviction.
DPP Ling applied for a new date for pre-trial case management and offered no bail.
However, Awang requested bail, stating that he and his wife have a medical condition and while remanded, he was injected with painkillers to cope with the pain.
Awang also said he is from the B40 group and depends on his pension.
He also requested a deferral until Jan 30 as his lawyer is currently not available.
Syarifuddin allowed Awang bail of RM2,500 with a local surety and fixed March 1 for pre-trial case management.
