Kota Kinabalu: The level of cleanliness at the Safma Fisheries Complex area here will be given a boost in the near future.

Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah said City Hall (DBKK) will hold discussions with Sabah Fish Marketing Sdn Bhd (Safma) to ensure the fishmongers operating there comply with the set guidelines.

“Right now, the level of cleanliness at the complex is not satisfactory, causing complaints among the public in the State Capital.

“I personally visited the complex today and admit that the level of cleanliness leaves much to be desired,” he said after visiting the Safma Fisheries Complex and Kota Kinabalu Central Market, Saturday.

The Mayor also said City Hall will take action to improve the public jetty in front of the Central Market and build several points for the public to board the jetty from boats.

He said he found the jetty to be old and less secure due to its slippery condition.

“This situation could invite danger to the public and civil servants who are on duty in Gaya Island, especially pregnant women who might face difficulties in going down from the jetty to the boat and vice versa,” he said.

Sabin said City Hall will also repair the Central Market after finding some issues that need to be rectified, especially the lights, fans and drains.

He also said City Hall will organise a cleanliness competition among stall operators at the Central Market.

“This is City Hall’s latest initiative to encourage traders at the Central Market to improve the cheerfulness of their stalls, in addition to prioritising cleanliness at all times.

“We advise all stall operators to always prioritise cleanliness because the Central Market is the focus of the public and tourists to get their daily supplies.”
