PETALING JAYA: Police have no information about Malaysians allegedly serving as mercenaries alongside Russians in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region as claimed by a Ukrainian military report.
Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said Bukit Aman’s Special Branch had checked on the claim with their counterparts in Europe.
“(We have) no information about our citizens being hired as mercenaries in that country as reported,” he told the media here today.
Razarudin reminded the public that the police would not compromise with anyone who acts as a mercenary or terrorist, even in a war-torn country.
“If they are found to be a mercenary or terrorist, their passport will be retracted. Malaysia will not support their decision to go to war in a war-torn country,” he said.
He said action can also be taken against them under the Special Measures against Terrorism in Foreign Countries Act (SMATA) 2015.
Earlier, Ukraine’s National Resistance Center claimed that mercenaries from Malaysia, accompanied by a translator, as well as a former Wagner member were spotted in the temporarily occupied territories of Donetsk.
It said Cubans, Nepalis, Belarusians and Serbs were among those who had repeatedly been seen as “members of the Russian armed forces”.
It warned that anyone fighting alongside Russians against Ukraine was a military target.
