Bersatu to amend party constitution to keep MPs in line
In recent months, six Bersatu MPs have declared their support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim without quitting the party to avoid triggering the anti-hopping law.
PETALING JAYA: Bersatu has agreed to amend Article 10 of the party’s constitution to keep its elected representatives in line, says its secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin.

This comes after six Bersatu MPs declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim without quitting the party to avoid triggering the anti-hopping law.

In a statement, Hamzah said the decision was made by the Supreme Council last night.

“We have also agreed to take legal action against elected representatives who have betrayed the party in order to have their seats vacated. Bersatu is ready to face by-elections,” he said.

The Bersatu MPs who have pledged their support for Anwar in recent months are Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar), Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan), Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal (Bukit Gantang) and Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjung Karang).

All six MPs cited their constituencies’ needs and said they supported the federal government’s policies. However, they said they would remain loyal to Bersatu.

Several Bersatu leaders have since challenged these MPs to vacate their seats and allow for a by-election.

In the statement, Hamzah also said the Supreme Council unanimously agreed that the party would continue fighting for its struggle under the leadership of Muhyiddin Yassin as president.

“(This is) not only in the context of empowering the party as a whole but also to appear more credible, firm and brave in combating malicious slander and injustices by the Anwar Ibrahim-led government,” he said.
