119 receive first-ever song royalties

Kota Kinabalu: Music Rights Sabah (MRS), the Collective Management Organisation (CMO) for Sabah and Labuan, has completed its first-ever royalty distribution, benefitting 119 members for 1,011 songs.

MRS Managing Director Mohd Ashraf Abdullah said that as of Jan 1, the body has 472 registered members – including five recording companies with 3,486 local ethnic songs.

“From Sept 1, 2022, until May 31, 2023, the collective management organisation (CMO) has collected a royalty of RM59,381.62 for public or general performances of registered works,” he said at the royalty distribution ceremony, here, Wednesday.

“Based on this collection, RM34,063.10 of royalties would be distributed to 117 individual members and two recording company members.”
