KENINGAU: A local woman died after her husband allegedly drenched her in petrol and set her alight at their home in Kg Tinagalan, Sook.
Keningau District Police Chief Supt Yampil Garai said that they received initial information about the incident at 12.09am on Saturday.
“At 3.45pm on Sunday, we were informed by the Keningau Hospital that the victim, Sansiah Tinggian
(pic), 41, succumbed to her injuries at 1.41pm the same day,” he said.
According to Yampil, preliminary investigations revealed that the woman and her husband began drinking around 4pm on Tuesday at their house in Kg Tinagalan.
At around 10pm the same day, their 16-year-old daughter witnessed them in a furious dispute while highly intoxicated.
During the argument, the man allegedly threatened to burn his wife, resulting in her challenging him to do so.
The man walked downstairs to get a gallon of petrol, then returned upstairs and allegedly splashed it on his wife.
He then allegedly lit a match and tossed it on his wife.
The son attempted to put out the fire on his mother’s body but failed.
He, along with his father, managed to escape the house with two other siblings who were sleeping when the fire broke out.
While the son sought help from his uncle, the man brought his wife to the Sook Clinic for treatment before being rushed to the Keningau Hospital.
At 1.41pm on Sunday, the hospital pronounced the woman dead.
The body was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for post-mortem.
The man was subsequently detained by police for further investigations.
Meanwhile, in TAMBUNAN, eight people were injured when a Proton Saga BLM collided with two motorcycles and crashed into a nearby house, causing damage to a room.
The incident at Kampung Dalab Pantai, here, Sunday night, also saw the occupants of the house, a man and a woman, both 48 years old suffering minor injuries.
District Fire and Rescue Station received a call at 9.05pm and rushed to the scene with eight members led by Operation Commander, Tonny Sipin with machinery.
Also present were officers from the Ministry of Health, Tambunan. Both motorcyclists, aged 19-year-old, were injured.
Two men, aged 17 and 45, and a boy and girl aged five and four, inside the Proton sustained minor injuries.
Initial treatment was carried out by EMRS at the scene and the injured motorcyclists were sent to the hospital.
