KUNAK: Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration is a medium to cultivate the spirit of goodwill and to strengthen unity among the people, said Kunak Assemblywoman, Datuk Norazlinah Arif.
Norazlinah said the township’s interracial ties are strong, as evident in the annual festivities.
“This is our uniqueness, which should be maintained,” she said when presenting oranges to the business and industry communities around the township here Monday.
Kunak Assemblyperson Service Office and the Kunak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry jointly organised the programme.
“In our keenness to pursue development and fight for our rights, do not forget that the foundation of the State is the unity among the multiracial people that should be preserved and strengthened.”
She also reminded the people, especially parents, to prioritise their children’s safety when they go for outdoor recreational activities during the school holidays.
“Be attentive to the surroundings of the areas visited,” she said.
Meanwhile, the sites of the burned houses in Kampung Kunak Tiga have been cleared to rebuild new homes for the fire victims.
Kampung Kunak Tiga village chief Panglima Abdul Lahil Sarail said the government would provide housing aid to the fire victims.
On Monday, Abdul Lahil and Kampung Kunak Tiga Development and Security Committee (JKKK) Chairman Mohd Kiram Silungan visited the site.
In November, six houses were razed to the ground in an early morning fire, causing nine families homeless.
Abdul Lahil said some victims squatted in their neighbours’ houses while the rest opted to rent houses.
