Chinese national hurt while climbing Kinabalu

RANAU: A Chinese citizen had to be rushed down to Timpohon Gate for treatment after he fell and was found bleeding from the head and ears while scaling Mount Kinabalu, Monday.

The Mount Kinabalu search and rescue team (MoSAR) responded quickly to the plight of Chen Jiqing in the incident that happened at KM7.5 near Sayat-Sayat Gunung Kinabalu, at about 7.35am.

Ranau Fire and Rescue Department Chief, PPgB Ridwan bin Mohd Taib, said his side received a call through the Station Line and a team of six MoSAR personnel, led by the Operation Officer, PBB Kuintien bin Gangok, rushed to the scene.

Also involved were six mountain guides and two Sabah Park Rangers.

“We found that a climber fell and hit the back of his head on a rocky ground, causing bleeding on the victim’s head and ears.

“MoSAR, together with Malim Gunung and Park SAR, brought the victim down using the Piggyback Carry method and was then handed over to the ambulance and taken to the hospital for further treatment,” he said.

He added that the case on Monday became the second case for the month of February this year, and fifth for 2024.

He reiterated his advice to all climbers to take a serious assessment of their health before climbing Mount Kinabalu.

He said there must be mental and physical preparations, and only bring along suitable and necessary items.

“Always climb in groups. Don’t walk alone and make sure to be attentive to what the guides advise.”
