Duo fined for fighting

Kota Kinabalu: Two men were fined a total RM2,000 by the Magistrate’s Court here for fighting in public.

Jorhan Mopium, 37, and Redzuan Saleh, 28, pleaded guilty separately before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to committing affray which disturbed public order at 10 am on Feb 8, behind the Suria Sabah Shopping Mall.

Jorhan and Redzuan were each fined RM1,000, or two months jail.

The charge under Section 160 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to six months or a fine of up to RM1,000 or both, on conviction.

The prosecution, in tendering the facts of the case, told the court that a fight broke out between Jorhan and Redzuan at the unloading area behind the Shopping Mall.

Counsel Lim Ming Zoong, representing Jorhan, requested a lenient fine as Jorhan’s daily income is RM50.

Lim, also representing Redzuan, requested a lenient fine as the accused is a fisherman and married with one child.

In another case, an unemployed man was charged with misappropriation of property, three years ago.

Hafizul Nuel, 38, pleaded not guilty to dishonestly using the RM250 cash belonging to Syukur Suardi at a law firm in Damai Plaza on Dec 29 2021.

The charge, under Section 403 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of between six months and five years, whipping and liability of a fine, on conviction.

The prosecution, in applying for another mention date, offered Hafizul bail of RM6,000 with two sureties.

Hafizul, who was not represented, requested a lower bail amount.

Stephanie fixed March 6 for pre-trial case management and released Hafizul with a RM2,000 bail with two sureties.
