PETALING JAYA: A father is seeking RM3 million in compensation from a university in Kedah where his daughter was electrocuted to death in her dormitory two years ago.

The 55-year-old plaintiff named the university as the defendant in the suit filed at the Alor Setar High Court on Feb 28, according to Berita Harian.

According to the statement of claim, the plaintiff said his daughter was found dead on the floor of her dormitory room on May 21, 2022. A post-mortem concluded that she had died from electric shock.

“The Alor Setar sessions court, acting under Section 333 of the Criminal Procedure Code, confirmed that electric shock was the cause of death.

“This was confirmed in a letter dated Feb 1 from the deputy registrar of the Alor Setar sessions court,” he said.

The victim’s father said the university had the responsibility and legal obligation of ensuring his daughter’s safety as well as compliance with the Electricity Supply Act 1990 and Electricity Regulations 1994.

“In breach of its legal duty of care, the defendant failed to ensure her safety from electric shock and failed to maintain the electrical installation properly, resulting in her being electrocuted, leading to her death,” he said.

He claimed the defendant also failed to take reasonable precautions to prevent injury, damage, or death from electric shock by allowing damaged electrical equipment to remain in use.
