Kota Kinabalu: A team of officers from the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Costs of Living (KPDN) in Sabah arrested a 30-year-old Pakistani after he was found hoarding 108kg of granulated sugar without a licence on Wednesday.

KPDN Sabah Director Georgie Abas said acting on a public tip-off during “Ops Tiris” at 10.27am in a housing area in Likas, the sugar was discovered inside a Mitsubishi four-wheel drive within a house compound.

“The sugar and vehicle seized were valued at RM 50,307.80,” he said, adding the case is being investigated under the Supply Control Act 1961 and the Supply Control Regulations 1974.

Individuals found guilty of the offence can be fined up to RM1 million or imprisonment of not more than three years, while the maximum fine is RM2 million for corporate bodies.

Georgie said the Sabah KPDN is actively conducting inspections in an effort to curb leakages and diversion of controlled and subsidised goods.

“Consumers are advised to be vigilant and report any information regarding the misuse of controlled and subsidised items to the authorities,” he said.

The public is encouraged to share information with any KPDN branch to collectively address this issue, or through the WhatsApp hotlines at https://www.wasap.my/60192794317 or https://www.wasap.my/60198488000; via email at [email protected]; by calling the 1-800-886-800 hotline; or via the Ez Adu KPDN app.
