Warisan: Do something about this

Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Kota Kinabalu Division Information Chief Samuel Wong urged the Government to act on the alarming accumulation of trash around Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal.

The indiscriminate dumping of rubbish in the area, he said, is an environmental concern, apart from casting a shadow over the pristine waters of Kota Kinabalu.

He said the Jesselton Point Ferry Terminal is a key spot for tourists heading to the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park islands and has been adversely affected.

“This growing pollution is not just an eyesore but also damages KK City’s reputation as a beautiful destination,” Wong said in a statement .

“The problem extends beyond mere aesthetics. The accumulation of trash in the sea poses a significant threat to marine life and disrupts the balance of the aquatic ecosystem.

“Moreover, the pollution could potentially harm the local tourism industry, a significant contributor to the city’s economy,” he added.

Saying the solution should not be limited to surface-level clean-ups, he urged the Government to delve deeper into the root causes of this pollution.

“The Government’s role is to investigate the root causes of this pollution, find sustainable solutions and implement effective preventative measures,” Wong opined.

This approach, he believes, is fundamental to governance and crucial for the long-term welfare of the people and the environment.

“With the city’s reputation as a beautiful tourist destination at stake, the call for action is urgent.

“We need action, not excuses. Our seas, our city and our people deserve better,” Wong asserted, calling for immediate and decisive government intervention to reverse this environmental crisis.

The situation in Kota Kinabalu serves as a stark reminder of the importance of sustainable waste management and the preservation of natural beauty.

It underscores the need for a collective effort - from the Government, residents and visitors - to safeguard the environment and maintain the city’s appeal to tourists.
