SANDAKAN: The Sandakan Prisons Department sponsored a breaking-fast programme that demonstrated its effectiveness in socialising prisoners.
More than 50 prisoners were allowed to break their fast in a relaxed setting with members of the public in an open area on the prison grounds.
Sabah and Labuan Deputy Prisons Director Abd Rauf Lang Pasih said this is an annual activity as part of their rehabilitation programme carried out in prisons across the country.
“The programme’s goal is to foster a sense of familial unity among residents and those on duty.
“This is also in line with the department’s agenda through the Civilised Humane Culture Development Centre, whereby this Department acts as a leader in providing world-class correctional services that elevate human-centred service aspects,” he said at breaking of fast ceremony with detainees at the Sandakan Prisons on Tuesday.
During the event, RM1,425 in zakat fitrah paid by Muslim detainees was handed over to a representative from the Sabah Zakat Centre.
Meanwhile, a prisoner named Sheikh thanked Sandakan Prisons Director AB Nasif Sarahan for allowing him to break his fast with the public.
