PETALING JAYA: Malaysia got off to a good start in the Thomas Cup finals in Chengdu, China, this morning by taking a commanding 4-0 lead against Hong Kong in their Group D clash.
Professional men’s singles player Lee Zii Jia put Malaysia 1-up when he beat Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu 21-18, 21-18 in the opening encounter, Bernama reported.
Top men’s doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik made it 2-0 when they outclassed Law Cheuk Him-Yeung Shing Choi 21-16, 21-12.
National singles shuttler Leong Jun Hao clinched the tie for Malaysia when he came from one game down to Angus Ng Ka Long before prevailing 17-21, 21-12, 21-15.
In the second doubles, Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani overcame Reginald Lee-Tang Chun Man 21-19, 21-18 to put Malaysia 4-0 up.
There is one more match more to go in the Malaysia-Hong Kong tie.
Malaysia also have Algeria and Denmark for company in Group D. The top two teams will advance to the quarter-finals.
