Kota Kinabalu: An unemployed woman who sold her housemate’s gold jewellery to a pawnshop for RM2,837 was fined RM6,000 by the Magistrate’s Court, Friday.
Jemiah Manan, 39, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Lovely Natasha to three counts of disposing of stolen jewellery belonging to Oyzzie Esther Roland.
On the first count, Jemiah was fined RM2,000 or five months jail for disposing of the a gold bracelet weighing 2.96gm for RM750 at the Luqman Gold Shop here on March 29.
Jemiah was fined RM2,000 or five months jail on the second count of disposing of a 1.82gm gold bracelet for RM460 at the same shop on March 30.
She was fined another RM2,000 or five months jail on the third count of disposing of a 5.69gm gold jewellery for RM1,627 at Dremas Sdn Bhd in Putatan on March 30.
Each charge under Section 414 of the Penal Code carries a jail term of up to seven years or fine or both, on conviction.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, informed the court that the complainant lodged a police report after realising her jewellery was missing and suspected her housemate stole it.
The court heard that Jemiah was arrested by police at Taman Penampang.
Unrepresented, Jemiah requested a lower fine as she is jobless while the prosecution applied a deterrent sentence.
In another case, two men were jailed five months each for keeping stolen properties.
Albogi Over and Josmal Abdul admitted to having five rolls of wire belonging to Da Run company on board a boat at Sepanggar on Dec 12, 2023 at 1pm.
They were charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to five years or fine or both, on conviction.
