Ship technician dies after falling into tank in KB
KOTA BELUD: A ship engine technician died after a 13.5-metre fall into a tank at an offshore platform here at about 2pm on Sunday.

The 51-year-old victim was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) after arriving via helicopter.

Acting District Police Chief ASP Tajuddin Padis said the victim was ordered to check the oil levels in the vessel’s tank before falling through an open lid.

“Another individual who saw the incident reported it to the ship’s captain, and a search and rescue operation was carried out.

“The victim was found with a broken arm and was still conscious, but his condition grew weaker, and he was sent to the hospital via helicopter.

“The victim arrived at the Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 9.40pm. He was confirmed dead by medical officers,” he said.

The case is classified as sudden death (SDR) as investigations continue. The body was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for an autopsy.
