PETALING JAYA: Senate president Mutang Tagal, who is being treated at the National Heart Institute (IJN) in Kuala Lumpur, is in serious condition, according to a Sarawak deputy minister.
State deputy minister in the premier’s department Gerawat Gala said Mutang’s family had informed him about his condition, The Borneo Post reported.

“I have just received information that his health condition is still serious and that not much has changed after he was flown back to Kuala Lumpur from Azerbaijan.
“We pray for his speedy recovery,” Gerawat was quoted as saying.
He added that he had always thought Mutang, 69, was very fit and healthy, and that his heart condition had caught him by surprise.
“In fact, we often play golf together,” said Gerawat.

Yesterday, the Dewan Negara president’s office urged the public against speculating or spreading false information on Mutang’s health condition.
Mutang travelled to Azerbaijan to lead the Malaysian delegation at the 6th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue from May 1 to 3 in Baku.

However, he had to be treated there for an illness before arriving back in Malaysia on May 6 for further treatment. He was admitted to IJN upon arriving in Kuala Lumpur.
Mutang was appointed Dewan Negara president on Feb 19, becoming the first indigenous Sarawakian to hold the post after taking over from Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
