Police bust break-in syndicate in Tawau

TAWAU: Police busted a business premises break-in syndicate that has been operating since last January involving a loss of about RM50,000 with the arrest of four suspects, including one with 33 previous criminal records.

Tawau Police Chief ACP Jasmin Hussin said, all the local suspects aged between 19 and 41, were arrested between May 6 and 12 by police team from the Criminal Investigation Division of IPD Tawau.

He said police also seized items from the suspects involved and it was found that one of them was a person under supervision with 33 previous criminal records for various offences.

“The investigation also found the modus operandi of this syndicate is to target shops closed from 11pm to 7am,” he said on Monday.

Jasmin said the police had received a report from a restaurant owner whose shop was broken into on January 14 and lost RM900 in cash.

He said the CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media Facebook causing public unrest.

He said until May 2, the police received 22 police reports involving break-in of business premises using the same modus operandi.

“The case incurs a loss of about RM50,000,” he said, adding the police are investigating.
