Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Karate Association (SKA) returned with five golds, four silvers and nine bronzes at the recent 2nd Dasril Muchtar Cup International Open & Festival held at Gedung Gymnasium UPI in Bandung, Indonesia from May 24-26.
They finished fourth overall behind three local teams Inkanas Jabar who took the overall title with 17 golds, 11 silvers and 38 bronzes followed by Inkanas Jakarta Timur with 11 golds, nine silvers and 12 bronzes and Inkanas Sumatera Barat with six golds, one silver and two bronzes.
SKA’s gold medals were won by the male team Kata (8-9 years old), Calantha Caniera Collin Gahis (female individual kata 8-9), Muhammad Kasyaf Akid Abd Rashid (male 8-9 Kumite -30kg), Iona Siew Lin Maria Fernandez King (female 10-11 Kumite +35kg) and Chrisly Shawn Christopher (male 12-13 Kumite -45kg).
The silvers were won by Iona Siew (female 10-11 Individual Kata), the female team Kata (10-11), Muhammad Uqael Uqasyah Isma Adam (male 8-9 Kumite +30kg) and Danish Rayyan Rajis (male 12-13 Kumite -50kg).
The nine bronze medallists were Kasyaf Akid (male 8-9 Individual Kata), Shane Aris Staun (male 8-9 Kumite -30kg), Calantha Caniera (female 8-9 Kumite +25kg), Mohd Irfan Shah Mohd Fadsli Shah (cadet male kumite -70kg), Cassandra Jane Cornelius (cadet female kumite -54kg), Calvarez Aiden Joey Ryan Gundok (male 12-13 d Kumite -45kg), Zac Adler Marius (male 12-13 Kumite +55kg), Zanna Mae Marius (female 10-11 Kumite -30kg) and Danial Henry Soimpon (male 10-11 Kumite -35kg).
SKA were represented by a 48-member squad and they also won multiple medals in the festival events which were not counted on the official medal tally.
Its secretary general Julian Chin was happy with the performance of the athletes.
“It was a successful outing for these athletes as our purpose of sending the team overseas is for them to get the exposure and experience to compete in a foreign country.”
