Tenom: A 66-year-old man was killed while a 71-year-old woman was seriously injured when the Perodua Kembara they were travelling in collided with a 10-tonne lorry at Mile 8, Kampung Sapong Tenom-Kemabong Road, here, Friday morning.
The 66-year-old Kembara driver was confirmed dead at the scene, while the 71-year-old woman passenger sustained serious injuries.
The 46-year-old driver of the lorry, which was carrying four drums (one filled with chlorine and three empty), escaped unhurt.
The District Fire and Rescue Station received a call at 11.46am and five members led by operation commander Shahril Sulaiman were dispatched to the scene.
Police and Ministry of Health (MOH) officers were also present.
The victim’s body was successfully removed from the wreckage by firemen and handed to the police for further action, while the injured was sent to Tenom Hospital by a MOH ambulance before the firemen arrived.
The operation ended at 1.17pm after ensuring that the situation no longer posed danger.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday night, a semi-permanent house was destroyed in a fire in Kampung Napingging Pulong.
The district Fire and Rescue Station received a call at 7.29pm and six firemen led by Operations Commander Ruziana Dapar rushed to the scene.
The firemen extinguished the fire by using a stream of 200-foot with two fountains from the water source of the machinery tank.
The operation ended at 8.43pm.
