KUNAK: A mural on one of the walls at the Boheyan Plaza Building here which houses the District office highlights the surrounding natural beauty of the seabed.

There are images of marine life including fish, turtles and coral reefs in a combination of colours sure to attract the attention of those passing the area.

The artist, Kunak local Nurgajir @ Gajir Noor, said he initiated the idea.

Gajir Art Calligraphy is a familiar name for art appreciators in the area.

Cosmobeauté Malaysia and beautyexpo will expand into East Malaysia with the launch of the Cosmobeauté Malaysia Borneo Festival 2026 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) from May 25 to 26.
“Taking the theme of natural beauty at the bottom of the sea, the concept was chosen according to the name of the commercial and business premises, which is Bangunan Boheyan Plaza,” he said.

Boheyan or Bohayan is one of the unique off Kunak.

The seabed has various types of fish in addition to other marine life including turtles and fertile coral reefs.

Gajir, who is a Kunak District Councillor, said he suggested raising the image of the town to an art city by decorating building walls.

“The mural painting, it is not just ‘art’ but rather an inspiration to the community about nature and marine life that needs to be preserved for the sake of future generations,” he said.

The district’s largest mural was completed last month with help from his friends.

“With the cost of paint increasing compared to previous years, it is one of the challenges when producing attractive and quality mural paintings,” said Gajir.

Kunak District Council Executive Officer, Mohd Nazri Pintal hoped that mural would be well maintained.
