Kota Kinabalu: Kota Kinabalu Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda said police will open an investigation into the #KamiMahuAir Sabah demonstration.

“The situation is under control. The demonstration does not have many participants...only between 20 and 30 people,” he said when met in front of Menara Kinabalu, Friday.

“They just want to meet the Chief Minister (Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor)…coincidentally, the Chief Minister is not in the office.

“That was why Datuk Shahelmey Yahya represented him (Hajiji) to receive the memorandum. Datuk Fairuz (Renddan) contacted me and told me that the Chief Minister is willing to meet them (the demonstrators) next week to receive the memorandum.”

Kasim said police would monitor the situation and allow the demonstrators to voice their demands.

“The demonstrators said they will wait until tomorrow (Saturday), and the police will continue to monitor the situation,” he said.

He reiterated that the demonstrators did not have a permit to hold the gathering, although they had notified the police of the event.

The case, he said, would be investigated under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Meanwhile, police detained nine individuals without identification documents, believed to be participating in the #KamiMahuAir Sabah gathering.

Kasim confirmed that they were detained after they arrived at the protest site.

“As they were leaving in a vehicle, the police inspected the van they travelled in and found that nine individuals did not possess identification documents.

“All of them have been taken to the police station and are currently undergoing documentation processes,” he said.
