Kota Kinabalu: Host Tawau Prisons Department emerged champions in the Sabah Prisons Director’s Cup football tournament held at the Tawau Prison Football Field from June 14-16.
The team powered by former Rhinos Ricco Nigel Milus and Aldrian J Agus came from behind to beat Sandakan Prisons Department 2-1 in the final to lift the trophy.
Both teams started the match cautiously and it was Sandakan who first broke the deadlock in the 39th minute through Cprian Rustin.
Tawau came back strongly in the second half and their effort was rewarded when Edward Musa scored the equaliser in the 50th minute before Ricco sealed the match with the winning goal in the 73rd minute.
Tawau’s Lawrence Le-Ying was also named man of the match in the final.
The winning team’s manager chief inspector Zairi Samsudin, who was delighted with the success, congratulated all the players and coaches for their achievement.
A total of seven prisons teams took part in the three-day competition and the others were from Keningau, Kota Kinabalu, Labuan, Lahad Datu and Sabah Prisons Headquarters.
The closing ceremony and prize presentation was officiated by State Prisons deputy director Senior Assistant Commissioner (SAC) Abdul Rauf Lang Pasih and also present was Tawau Prison’s director SAC Kamarul Zamah Ali Zaman representing State Prisons director Deputy Commissioner Hajah Nora Musa.
Meanwhile, organising committee spokesman Rosfaizal Samsudin said 20 players have been selected to represent the State to compete in the 40th Tan Sri Murad Ahmad Cup SeMalaysia Prisons Football Championship to be held in Melaka on June 26-30.
The team will be led by manager Supian Kamarudin and coaches are Roslan Wasli, Agustin Paga and Rosfaizal Samsudin, who is also one of the players selected together with Edward Musa, Tony Padilis, Tahang Chongo, Ikmal Keni, Mohd Sollehudin Akmad, Welhelmus William, Aldrian J. Agus, Ricco Nigel Milus, Muhammad Dzul ikram, Ghani Karim, Ramzie Ramlan, Helmi huzaini, Jellysius Soimpon, Jasmit Ahmad, Welson Jhonny, Muhammad Syarif, Hazrun Izzat, Ramlee Binsin and Hairun Hamidun.
