MEMBAKUT: Some 99 flood victims from 40 families here were transferred to Dewan Selagon, Beaufort, on Sunday.
Membakut Fire and Rescue Station Chief Muhammad Hasbullah Nenggok said they comprised 19 men, 36 women, 19 boys, 21 girls, three baby boys and a baby girl.
He said among the villages involved were Kg Kayai, Kg Mandangin, Kg Bambangan, Kg Baitam, Kg Limapayau and Kg Jambatan Baru.
According to him, they received instructions from the Royal Malaysian Police via a phone call at 6.09pm and rushed an aluminium rescue boat to the location.
“The first step was to rescue 14 families from the disaster area and transport them using a rescue truck,” said Muhammad Hasbullah.
They were transferred to the Selagon temporary evacuation centre (PPS) where they were welcomed by members of the Social Welfare Department, the Malaysian Health Department, Rela and the Civil Defence Force (APM).
Muhammad Hasbullah advised the public, especially flood victims, to keep important documents in a dry safe place.
“If there is an order to evacuate, follow the instructions of the rescue team.
“If you refuse it will only trouble yourself because the rescue team will take time to return as there are many more to be evacuated,” he said
He also advised residents who have not yet been evacuated and are being evacuated to ensure their children do not play in the floodwaters to avoid any untoward incidents.
