Kota Kinabalu: A 32-year-old local was jailed 12 months by the Magistrates’ Court, Friday, for committing mischief by cutting cables in a building here.
Nurham Raji, unemployed, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to cutting cables in the Wisma Kewangan building, Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman at 5.30pm on July 1.
The facts of the case presented by the prosecution stated that Nurham was caught red-handed by police during the Ops Lusuh, while cutting the cables in the building.
The police raided the place following a report lodged on the same day by the complainant who found electric and air conditioner cables were cut and stolen on the second floor of the building.
The stolen cables together with the cutting tools were seized by the police, the facts stated.
The charge, under Section 431A of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to two years or a fine, or both, upon conviction.
On July 4, two local men were each jailed five months by another Magistrates’ Court for committing mischief by cutting cables at a hotel construction site in Asia City on June 27, this year.
In another case, a woman was fined RM2,000 or two months’ jail for gambling in public.
Atikah Barli admitted before Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles to committing the offence on Feb 8, this year, at 4.40pm, at a premises in Taipan, Inanam.
Inspector Kelvan Elson Maik, prosecuting, said Atikah was arrested by police during Ops Dadu, for engaging in online gambling activity.
The charge, under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming House Act, provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to six months’ jail, or both, on conviction.
Meanwhile, a 38-year-old man was ordered to pay a fine of RM100 or one-day jail for having cables that are believed to be stolen.
Amid Rashid pleaded guilty to having 15 cable rods measuring 2m each. He failed to give explanation on how he obtained them during a roadblock at Jalan Tuaran Bypass, Inanam, at 11.20am on July 3.
He was charged under Section 22A (1) of the Minor Offences Ordinance, which provides a fine of up to RM100 or up to three months’ jail, or both, on conviction.
