Kota Kinabalu: Malaysia's position on a global skills ranking has fallen.
Its position in the Coursera 2024 Global Skills Ranking fell from 67th in 2023 to 79th, behind three fellow Southeast Asian countries Singapore, Indonesia and Vietnam.
Coursera CEO Jeff Maggioncalda said while skill rankings are crucial, they are not the sole indicators of advancement.
He said there are several countries that have witnessed a surge in new learners coming online for the first time, including those with basic skills.
“It may reduce their ranking in the short term, but it signals major strides towards a digitised workforce,” he said in Coursera’s sixth annual Global Skills Report.
E-learners in Malaysia have been constantly rising, recording a 97% year-over-year increase in Professional Certificate enrolment, highlighting Malaysia’s growing demand for tech professionals.
That is in addition to a first AI faculty in the country set up at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia this year.
Maggioncalda said a learner signed up for a GenAI course on Coursera every minute in 2023 and this rate had quadrupled by 2024.
The global skill proficiency rankings across business, technology, and data science for 109 countries are based on the performance of learners on Coursera and key economic indices.
