Kota Kinabalu: All concession companies appointed by City Hall (DBKK) to clean and maintain drains in the city are advised to deliver efficient services.
Mayor Datuk Dr Sabin Samitah said the DBKK Hotline received a public complaint on July 2 about a drain blocked by rubbish in Taman Seri Indah, Kuala Menggatal.
He said an inspection found the maintenance and cleaning of drains in the area are under the jurisdiction of an appointed concession company.
“DBKK immediately forwarded the complaint to the concession company. However, the same complaint was received again on July 3. DBKK then re-inspected the status of the complaint and found the drain cleaning work had been carried out by the concession company on July 5.
“The large amount of garbage in the drain caused the blockage of water flow,” he said in a statement.
Sabin said the garbage piles had been cleared and the drainage system is now flowing well.
He urged all appointed concessionaires to give their best performance, increase the frequency of the maintenance schedule and comply with the specified work scope and specifications.
“City Hall prioritises the wellbeing and safety of the public,” Sabin said.
At the same time, he also called on city dwellers to jointly take responsibility for maintaining the drainage system by not throwing garbage into the drains.
“This action contributes to the problem of clogged drains and ultimately prevents the drainage system from working properly,” Sabin said.
