KUCHING: The Sarawak government is exploring various renewable energy (RE) technologies that can help the state achieve its target of producing 10 gigawatts (GW) of power by 2030, premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg said.

He said at present, Sarawak had an installed capacity of 5.7GW of power through a mix of hydroelectric, coal and gas sources.

“Within these three years, we want to upgrade to 10GW. We will explore various technologies that can generate RE to provide this,” he said here.

Abang Johari said that right now, Sarawak is experimenting with floating solar energy generation technology at the Batang Ai hydroelectric dam.

He said this experiment covered a little more than 3% of the dam’s body of water to produce about 50MW of power.

Abang Johari said this could potentially be increased to 2GW should 60% of the waterbody be used.

“We are trying it at only one dam, but we have four more dams,” he said, referring to the Bakun, Murum, Baleh and Bengoh dams.
