SIPITANG: A suspension bridge in Kampung Luagan is at risk of breaking and collapsing due to logs being stuck brought by recent flood.
The residents’ access to town could be off as a result, said a resident, Omar.
He said the trunk of a wooden tree is lodged in the suspension bridge and more wood might get stuck causing it to drift away.
“Residents do not have any alternative way to get to town, and using a boat is more dangerous because of the strong river currents.
“People are worried about the bridge being damaged because it is essential, especially for schoolchildren, pregnant women and sick individuals, in addition to those who work in Sipitang,” Omar said.
“The situation will be particularly difficult for pregnant women about to give birth and for transporting the sick to the hospital which requires two to three people to cross the suspension bridge.
“The residents have no other option but to use this suspension bridge daily.
“Residents avoid using the bridge during floods because they fear it might be washed away, as the bridge’s pillars are also at risk of strong current,” Omar said.
Residents urged Sindumin Assemblyman Datuk Dr Yusof Yacob, who is also Chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Berhad, and Sipitang MP Datuk Matbali Musah, to build a concrete bridge for the benefit of the villagers.
